ZACK THURMOND
Born in 1979 in St. Louis, Missouri, Zack Thurmond has felt a lifelong pull toward the Mountain West. Although artistically inclined since childhood, it was his move to Gunnison, Colorado in 2000 that ignited his passion for landscape painting and set the course for his artistic life. Largely self-taught, Zack later earned his BFA in drawing and painting from Boise State University, and his work now resides in public and private collections across North America and Europe.
Zack’s practice is grounded in close observation of the natural world and a deep personal connection to place. Whether working in paint or carving woodcuts, he strives to capture simple, essential beauty—moments of quiet, shifting light, and the sensory stillness that lingers in the woods between raindrops. For Zack, light is everything, and he prefers to underwork a piece rather than lose the movement and immediacy of his brushwork.

In addition to his landscape work, Zack also creates charcoal, ballpoint, and graphite portraits of beloved “rainbow bridge” dogs, a practice he approaches with genuine reverence—“because dogs,” he says, “are the best people.” Across all mediums, Zack hopes his work offers viewers a moment to breathe, reflect, and appreciate the quiet beauty that surrounds us.
