LIZ COMER HESS
Liz Comer Hess is a contemporary painter based in Boise, Idaho, recognized for her dynamic depictions of motion and form. Raised on a farm in southern Idaho, she developed an early appreciation for discipline and the connection between humans and nature—an influence that continues to shape her artistic vision. Drawing from her lifelong relationship with horses and her background in design, Hess approaches painting as both a technical craft and a study of human experience.
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and Design, Hess built a successful career in marketing before returning to painting full time. Her professional experience refined her sense of visual balance and strengthened her ability to translate emotion through composition and form. A lifelong equestrian, she spends time each day riding and training at a sport horse facility in Eagle, Idaho, where her daily interactions with horses inspire and inform her work.

Working primarily in water-soluble oils and mixed media, Hess layers transparent and opaque tones to build depth, structure, and energy. Her process combines gestural drawing, texture, and color to create paintings that merge classical technique with a contemporary understanding of movement and anatomy.
While equestrian subjects remain central to her work, Hess uses them as metaphors for discipline, strength, and subtlety—the balance between motion and stillness. Her paintings capture not only what is seen, but what is felt: the quiet intensity within movement and the calm that follows. Her work has been featured in Cowboys & Indians magazine and exhibited throughout the western United States.
