JEFF MCKAY
Originally from Arkansas, Jeff McKay is a self-taught painter whose work is grounded in a deeply personal vision of the American West. His practice began in 1998 as a disciplined, after-hours pursuit while raising a family, gradually evolving into a sustained exploration of landscape shaped by early experiences traveling through the Rocky Mountain states. These formative memories continue to inform his work, where observation and recollection merge into atmospheric, emotive compositions.
After nearly two decades of independent study, McKay made a decisive shift—bringing a truckload of paintings west and securing gallery representation within days. What appeared to be an overnight success was, in reality, the culmination of years of focused inquiry and refinement. This turning point marked the beginning of his full-time studio practice, with his work quickly establishing a presence across the Mountain West through a steady cadence of solo exhibitions.

McKay’s paintings are distinguished by their tactile surfaces and dynamic use of color. Working in thick oil paint, he builds his compositions with palette knives and unconventional tools—maple sticks, combs, and brushes—creating richly textured passages that animate the landscape. His approach to “chords of color,” layering multiple hues within a single stroke, produces a sense of vibration and depth, while his evolving palette—carried from one painting to the next—creates a continuity across his body of work. Balancing earthy tonalities with moments of heightened color, his paintings distill both the physical presence and emotional resonance of the Western landscape.
