ESTHER OPPENHEIMER

Esther Oppenheimer is a mixed media artist based in Boise, Idaho, where she was born and raised. After time spent living in San Francisco and traveling internationally, she returned to Boise, where she continues her studio practice. Her work explores psychological depth, material experimentation, and the spontaneous interplay between texture, memory, and the natural world.

Esther earned her BFA in Art from Boise State University, where she studied under ceramics professor John Takehara and was introduced to Japanese clay traditions. At the same time, the Abstract Expressionist movement, particularly artists like Helen Frankenthaler, influenced her embrace of freedom, spontaneity, and personal expression in her artmaking.

Her early work focused on porcelain, leading to a large-scale strand installation at Ochi Gallery and an exhibition of porcelain vessels at the Blumenthal Gallery at the College of Idaho. In 1990, she held a solo exhibition at the Main Gallery in Old Boise. As her practice evolved, Esther deepened her exploration of psychological and emotional content through art, becoming an art therapist and continuing to advocate for the developmental importance of art in childhood. She currently co-teaches weekly art lessons to third graders alongside her son, Josh Oppenheimer.

Esther has served on the Boise Art Museum Board, including a term as Chair, and volunteered as a longtime docent. Art has remained a throughline in her life, and her current work brings together photography, sakuragumi paper, porcelain shards, lace, botanical materials, and canvas in layered, experimental compositions. With a practice rooted in openness and risk, she creates intuitively by embracing the unexpected and aiming to generate both immediacy and emotional resonance for the viewer.

Her process is an exploration of spontaneity and the subconscious, blending disparate elements into works that speak to space, energy, and transformation.
