CATE BRIGDEN

Cate Brigden is a visual artist based in Boise, Idaho. Rooted in a deep appreciation for observational drawing, her painting practice reflects a thoughtful engagement with the act of seeing. She studied at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where she focused on painting, drawing, and printmaking through the Foundations of Visual Art and Design program.
 
Brigden has received recognition through numerous awards, grants, and residencies. She was a James Castle House Resident in 2023 and received an Alexa Rose Foundation Grant in 2022. Her career honors include two nominations for the Pacific Northwest Art Award from the Portland Art Museum (2007, 2014) and a nomination for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award in 2008. She has also received support from the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the Vermont Studio Center.

Earlier in her career, Brigden served as Master Printer for the Pilchuck Print Program at the Pilchuck Glass School (1990–94) and worked as Printmaking Studio Assistant to artist Nancy Graves in 1992. She was also an Artist in Residence with the Washington State Arts Commission from 1988 to 1989. Her work is represented in public, private, and corporate collections across the Northwest, including the City of Boise’s Visual Chronicle, the Washington Art Consortium, and the Washington State Arts Commission’s Art in Public Places program, as well as collections held by Albertsons Corporation, Regence Blue Shield of Idaho, and the University of Washington Medical Center.
 
Brigden’s recent paintings are known for their natural forms, layered motifs, and rich color palettes. Drawing inspiration from historical textile design, she transforms organic shapes into intricate, rhythmic patterns that evoke transparency and movement. Through repetition, symmetry, and harmony, her work captures the quiet complexities and visual poetry of the natural world.
