BYRON BUCHANAN

Byron Buchanan discovered his talent for drawing in high school after winning first place in an art contest for a drawing of a white horse running through a field. That same year, he was asked to teach drawing in his school’s art class. For the next 15 years, however, he did not draw at all. Without attending art school or receiving formal lessons, he began painting at age 31 and started receiving portrait commissions. Though initially reluctant to pursue art professionally due to his lack of formal training, he ultimately committed to the path and became a full-time artist.

Buchanan learned to paint by studying the old masters—Rembrandt, Velazquez, Sargent, Mancini, and Caravaggio—and is also inspired by tonalist painters and pictorialist photographers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Working in airbrush acrylics and oils, he has explored styles ranging from photorealism to pop art. After moving to the Northwest, he rekindled his love for nature and American history, focusing his work on great Americans, their stories, and animal portraits—especially horses, which have been a lifelong presence.
