BETSIE RICHARDSON

Betsie Richardson is a professional oil painter based in Garden City, Idaho, whose work celebrates the beauty of the tangible in an increasingly digital world. Through her meticulous still-life paintings, she documents what feels most real—objects and foods that nourish, commemorate, and connect us. From vegetables grown by local farmers to cakes marking life’s milestones, her subjects evoke both personal memory and shared experience. Richardson’s aim is to render these objects with such realism that viewers feel compelled to reach into the canvas, reminded of the simple, tactile delights that surround us.

Food, in particular, holds a central role in her practice, reflecting its power to unite people as it once did for her own family of four sisters gathered nightly around the dinner table. Often featuring the work of local bakers, chefs, and growers, Richardson’s paintings honor their contributions while highlighting her own passion for detail and color. Her process demands hours of careful observation and color mixing to achieve bold chroma and strikingly lifelike textures, a technique rooted in her vision of the world through a “hyper-color lens.”

Richardson earned a double major in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts and Communications from the University of Washington and has worked professionally as a fine art painter and commercial artist since 2013. Her paintings have been collected nationwide by private and corporate patrons, including Zion Bank, hotels, and HB Workplaces: Sprague Studios, where her monumental 4-by-6-foot oil painting commemorates the merger of Knoll and Herman Miller. She exhibits through juried art fairs and BOSCO (Boise Open Studios), and accepts numerous private and corporate commissions, specializing in still-life memorabilia. In addition to her paintings, Richardson’s “tastefully naughty” greeting cards are sold by retailers across the country.

Beyond her studio, Betsie enjoys savoring the foods she paints with friends at Spaceport Studios, camping and backpacking with her husband and daughter, running in the Boise foothills, and playing classical piano. Her travels often inspire new subjects, driven by a love of exploring the world through food and shared connection.
