APRIL VANDEGRIFT

April VanDeGrift is a visual artist, illustrator, and educator based in Boise, Idaho. Working primarily in oil painting, her practice explores themes of nature, observation, and social commentary through experimental techniques and layered imagery. She often uses botanical and animal forms as metaphors for broader political and cultural issues, blending naturalistic detail with conceptual depth.

April earned her MFA in Painting and Drawing in 2014 and has since taught at the College of Western Idaho, The College of Idaho, and Boise State University. Her artwork is featured in the permanent collection of the City of Boise’s Department of Arts and History, including installations in the Mayor’s Office and City Council Chambers. Her artistic studies have taken her beyond Boise to Seattle, Japan, and Italy, each place influencing her evolving relationship with material, space, and subject matter.

Though rooted in oil painting, April’s work spans a range of media including murals, mixed media, and printmaking. Her recent projects incorporate additive and subtractive processes on paper to explore movement, memory, and dislocation—most notably in a collaborative installation with artist Goran Fazil examining the experience of immigration. Inspired by shadows of foliage cast across bleached paper, this series captures the disorientation and quiet beauty of navigating unfamiliar landscapes. Both introspective and outward-looking, April’s work reflects a continual exploration of form, identity, and the spaces in between.
